In a recent interview, Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges made an unexpected comparison between two of the NBA’s brightest stars: Luka Dončić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
When asked which player he finds easier to guard, Bridges pointed to Dončić, offering a candid explanation. “I’ll say Luka because sometimes Luka will take the day off on certain match-ups,” Bridges said. “Like if he doesn’t feel like playing that day then he’ll give that to Kyrie. Kyrie will go get 40 and Shai will straight do it.”
Bridges’ comments raised eyebrows, especially considering Dončić’s near-MVP season. While Dončić occasionally takes plays off defensively or shares the offensive load with Kyrie Irving, it’s largely due to the immense pressure he shoulders for the Mavericks. Even with Kyrie in the mix, Luka remains the engine driving Dallas forward.
On the other hand, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has made his mark with relentless consistency. Leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the top of the Western Conference, SGA’s slashing, ball-handling, and ability to take over games in clutch moments make him a nightmare for defenders.
While both players are elite in their own ways, Bridges’ take highlights a common narrative: Dončić’s occasional lapses and reliance on teammates, versus Gilgeous-Alexander’s do-it-all mentality. Ultimately, both stars have unique strengths that make them tough to guard, but Bridges’ insight offers a fresh perspective on their contrasting styles.
