Drake suffered a $1 million loss in sports bets last week when the Florida Panthers claimed their first Stanley Cup championship by defeating the Edmonton Oilers in seven games.
The Canadian rapper had placed a half-million-dollar bet on the Oilers, hoping to win $1.25 million. Despite the Oilers’ impressive comeback from a 0-3 series deficit to force a decisive Game 7, they fell short of securing their sixth franchise title, possibly falling victim once again to the infamous “Drake curse.”
Prior to the intense series, Drake had also wagered another half-million dollars on the NBA Finals, backing the Dallas Mavericks. However, despite a strong performance in Game 4 at home, Luka Doncic and his team ultimately succumbed to Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics in five games. If successful, Drake’s NBA bet would have earned him a payout of $1.37 million.
This loss follows less than three weeks after Drake faced a significant setback by betting on Tyson Fury to defeat Oleksandr Usyk in their bout in Saudi Arabia. Usyk’s victory by split decision denied Drake a potential payout of just over $1 million.
In their bid to become the first NHL team since the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942 to rally from a 0-3 deficit to win a championship, the Oilers put up a fierce figҺt. They pressed hard in the final period, outshooting the Panthers 9-4 and totaling 24 shots on goal compared to Florida’s 21 throughout the game. Despite Edmonton’s efforts, Florida’s strong defensive play, with 31 hits and 17 blocked shots to Edmonton’s 20 hits and 14 blocks, secured their 2-1 victory and their inaugural franchise championship on home ice.
