Will Smith to Premiere New Music at BET Awards Following Coachella Surprise
Will Smith is poised to unveil fresh musical material in his first major solo performance since the controversial Oscars incident.
Following his unеxpеcted appearance at Coachella, where he surprised fans with a performance alongside J Balvin, the 55-year-old Bad Boys star is gearing up to debut an original song at this weekend’s BET Awards, as reported by Deadline.
Connie Orlando, EVP Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET, expressed excitement about Smith’s return to the BET Awards stage, stating, “From his start as a rapper to The Fresh Prince to being a box office king as one of the Bad Boys, Will Smith is truly a global icon, and we are honored to welcome him back to grace the BET Awards stage.”
While specifics of Smith’s performance are currently undisclosed, sources indicate that he is actively working on a new album, according to the outlet. Smith’s last solo single was released in 2017, with his most recent album, Lost And Found, dating back to 2005.
Taraji P. Henson will host the BET Awards, where Usher is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The event will feature performances by a lineup including Ice Spice, Sexyy Red, Latto, Lauryn Hill & YG Marley, Tyla, GloRilla, Muni Long, Shaboozey, and Victoria Monét. Notable appearances are expected from Cardi B, Davido, Gunna, the Roots, Common, Queen Latifah, and the Jungle Brothers.
Smith’s forthcoming BET appearance comes on the heels of his cameo at Coachella in April, where he joined J Balvin onstage dressed in full Mеn in Black attire for Balvin’s UFO-themed set.
In May, Smith hinted at a significant musical project he’s been developing for the past eighteen months, describing it to ET as “without question the most personal, powerful music that I’ve ever made.”
Smith made headlines earlier this year for slapping comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Oscars in March 2022, following a joke made by Rock about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada herself published a memoir last year revealing a seven-year separation from her husband.
